I really hate a couple things I’ve been seeing on this website and I just felt that I need to make a personal post about it.
Lately there seems to be a lot of “animal advice” blogs popping up on Tumblr. Initially, I felt that this was a good thing. I follow several snake/reptile/herp blogs on my personal account that post a lot of amazing pictures and are really great about answering people’s questions and providing good information for reptile husbandry. But with all the good blogs, there also seems to be a few bad ones.
I came across a blog recently (not going to say the name of it) that has literally been going through tags and reblogging people’s posts/pictures to attack them for “poor animal care”. In doing so, they assert a “holier than thou” attitude and are extremely rude, sarcastic, and all around insulting about how they give what they assume to be advice.
In my experience as a reptile owner and animal owner overall, there is usually not one set, exact way to do something. Especially with geckos, there are so many varying opinions and conflicting ideas on substrate, heating, tank decoration, cohabitation, ect. that you can talk to two different but equally knowledgeable people and get different advice. I do not even pretend to know everything there is to know about geckos or any animal. I know the information I’ve gotten online and from breeders I’ve met in person, and I know what has kept my animals alive and healthy. If someone submits a question asking for my opinion on this blog I’ll gladly give it. But what I will NOT do is scroll through every gecko tag and assert myself as the “Gecko God” looking down on everyone and telling them what to do.
If I see an animal that is OBVIOUSLY sick, in danger, ect. that’s a different story. But am I going to reblog and publicly attack someone for using cut tile as a leopard gecko substrate just because I, personally, use paper towel? No, because they both work. Again, I don’t really see the point of shoving my opinions around where they’re not wanted or asked for. I always want people to do their research when it comes to animals and I’m happy to answer any questions submitted to the blog to the best of my knowledge. But demeaning people and treating them like idiots just for being unaware or even just uninformed is neither productive nor appropriate.
I want this to be a blog where people can look at pretty gecko pictures and feel comfortable asking for advice IF THEY WANT IT. And if I do see something in the tag that I really don’t approve of, I’d rather send the person a private message than criticize them in public.
So please, if you ever see such behavior on my part coming from this blog send me a message. I do not want to become a nasty mod because I’d rather just share my love for geckos and reptiles with everyone instead. :)
